You can also take your car to a dealership and get it appraised. Under this arrangement, the dealer will take your keys and hand the car over to his service department for an inspection.
Than inspection will reveal the vehicle's condition and will take note of potential problems. Your dealer will come up with a fair market value after subtracting costs for certain outstanding repairs and cosmetic updates. Use this appraised value for a negotiating point -- you may be able to get hundreds of dollars more by selling your vehicle to a private party.
Consider Its Condition
There are other factors that must be considered when weighing the value of your vehicle. These include its mileage in relationship to its age, body and interior condition, trim level and aftermarket accessories.
Other factors include the vehicle's size and efficiency. The more fuel efficient the car, the better its pricing will hold up. If mechanical repairs must be made, expect to subtract those costs from your price. Cosmetic requirements can impact your vehicle's worth too.

Achieving perfect timing for any car sale is a skill. You may find that it is worth your while to sink $2,000 in maintenance and repairs into your vehicle than make car payments that can exceed double that amount. If you own a gas guzzler, the time to get rid of it may have already passed -- expect to get less for this vehicle than its published price. With the latter, consider donating the vehicle and taking a tax deduction instead.
