Families going green is important to all of our futures. It doesn't mean you have to clutter up your home with recycling bins to achieve the common goal. Recycling is good for the planet, reduces waste in the landfills and creates jobs. First of all, getting involved in recycling programs is fun and builds communities. If you have to get rid of excess items, tossing them away in a landfill is not the answer. Learning where to recycle and learning how to recycle creates awareness that can be handed down from generation to generation. If that happens we can all be apart of saving the planet one family at a time. Many cities are participating in recycling programs of one form or another. The biggest concerns now are that the landfills have reached maximum capacity. Landfills weren't typically designed for all of the old refrigerators, microwaves, computers and other similar items that won't break down in the soil over time. Secondly, check with your city to see where these items can be taken for recycling. There are lots of government run organizations that will happily take these items off of your hands. Some of these organizations may charge a small fee, but it is worth it to avoid the toxins that build up from these items. Thirdly, recycling produces items that could be used by someone else. Clothing that has been outgrown can be donated to charities and churches. Old bottles and cans are melted down and turned back into bottles and cans. Take your old car to a recycling location for cars. The metal and rubber from the tires is broken down and recycled for various things. For example, old rubber tires have been used for playgrounds and track fields. Recycled items like that save schools money. Fourth, if your community recycles jobs are created. Each recycling center has employees who know exactly what to do with your items. There are strict government guidelines for recycling and they know what to do. The more recycling centers communities have the more jobs are available. Many cities offer recycling bins for your glass, paper and aluminum. More people are needed to drive the trucks that will come to your home to collect your bins. To learn more about recycling in your community go online or call your local city offices. Lastly, waste management in your community should be a number one priority. If the landfills get full because no one is recycling then potentially your trash won't get picked up because there is no place to take it. It's not just about metals, glass and furniture items, food can be recycled too. Learn about turning banana peels and apple cores into compost for your shrubs and gardens. Recycling doesn't have to be difficult or time consuming. If we start with knowing what and where to recycle, good habits are bound to happen. If we start kids early, they too will be in the habit and hand that habit down to their kids. This is a vicious cycle I would like to see continue. I am a parent and a writer. Reading is important and I encourage parents and children to pick up a book whenever possible. I graduated from Wichita State University with a Bachelor of Arts in English, with minors in Education and Minority Studies. I write fiction and nonfiction picture books covering topics that feature historical people of color, and subjects on famous women to empower young girls. I also love the art of the interview and create articles that capture the essence of human kind as well as provide important information and helpful hints for the reader. To help me achieve my goal of becoming a better writer I am a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), the Association of Children's Authors and Illustrators of Color (ACAIC) the Children's Writers Coaching Club (CWCC), the Kansas City Writers Meetup Group and I am currently enrolled in The Institute of Children's Literature.
