Botanical Gardens can be found in the west end of Glasgow at the top of Byres Road. The gardens have been in existence for nearly 100 years as they were built back in 1817. The gardens were started by Thomas Hopkirk who donated his collection of plants to start the eight acre park.
The gardens are still in existence today and are renowned the world over for the huge tropical plant collection.
The Kibble Palace Glasshouse visitor centre is opened each day from early morning around ten until six in the evening during summer months and four in the afternoon during the winter months. Inside the Kibble Palace you will find a tropical palace which includes trees and ferns, rose garden, herb garden and flower garden. There are guided tours on offer from park rangers and various childrens arts and crafts.
Kelvingrove park is another open green space within the west end of the city of Glasgow. The park is next to the Kelvingrove Art Galleries and Glasgow University. There is over 85 acres to this wonderful green space which was built in 1852. There are various walkways, statues and skate park within the space. There is a band stand and seating area doted around the site for visitors.
As it is situated close to the university there are many students which frequent the area typically on a sunny, hot, summer's day.
Glasgow Green can be found in the city centre close to the High Street and Saltmarket end of Argyle Street. The site is receiving funding from the Lottery for on going projects. There are several childrens playgrounds located at both ends of Glasgow Green. The peoples Palace and Winter Gardens are situated in the centre of the park.
On Guy Fawkes night each year the city council put on a firework display free of charge for the people of Glasgow. During May to September there are various events held in the park for the general public to come and take part in.
Victoria Park again is situated in the west end next to Scotstoun and Jordanhill. Built in the late 1870's and includes the famous Fossil Grove which is opened to the public most days between ten in the morning and four in the afternoon. During the summer months flower beds bloom and couples come for their wedding photographs to be taken. Visitors will also find tennis courts, bowling green and sometimes cricket played during the summer months.
The ponds are popular as children and guardians can hire a small boat and sail around the pond.
Moving over to the south side now. Located on Pollokshaws Road and Langside Ave you will find entrances to Queen's Park. A busy park from morning until night visitors will find events held throughout the year typically at Easter, Christmas, Halloween.
Various sporting venues such as tennis, football, and a boating pond are well used by the locals and visitors alike. If you feel you need a seat after all your walking you can bring along a picnic or head over to the café which is opened al year. Visitors will find also a glasshouse, pitch and putt and a couple of play areas for children, as well as all the bedding and plants on offer through out the year.
