On January 12, 2010 at 4:53 pm local time, Haiti experienced the country's most severe earthquake in over 200 years. The epicenter of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake was just west of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince and left an estimated 230,000 people dead, 300,000 injured and 1,000,000 homeless. Since the January 12 earthquake Haiti has endured 52 aftershocks measuring 4.5 or greater. Although international aid was dispatched immediately with many countries showing overwhelming generosity, the fact remains that Haiti will need to be rebuilt from the ground up. Even before the January 12 earthquake Haiti was identified as one of the world's poorest and least developed countries. Over 80% of the Haitian population lives in poverty, on just $2 or less a day. Half of the children in Haiti are unvaccinated and receive little or no health care. Shockingly, 90% of Haiti's children suffer from waterborne diseases and intestinal parasites. There are many ways you can join efforts to help disaster victims rebuild their lives and communities today and for years to come. 1. Donate: Whether it's $5 or $500 your donation will make a significant difference in the lives of the Haitian people. Currently, there are numerous charities and organizations accepting donations for Haiti relief efforts. Non-profit organizations such as Defy Thirst have built shelters and water filtration systems in Haiti to help combat one of Haiti and the world's primary cause of death and illness, unsafe drinking water. 2. Fund raise: Businesses, religious organizations, schools, and clubs have come up with many creative ways to raise funds and supplies for Haiti. A bake sale after school or a church sponsored car wash are just a few simple and easy ways to help raise funds. 3. Volunteer: Many organizations need volunteers to travel to Haiti to physically help in any way they can. In many cases volunteers are needed to distribute food, clothing, and medical supplies. Many volunteers are also assisting in building shelters and infrastructure. 4. Host a Family: Some Haitian families were able to evacuate Haiti and have been granted Temporary Protected Status in the United States. Haitian refugees need homes so why not open your door? 5. Remember: As media coverage on Haiti tails off it is important not to forget about the victims and their continued need for aid. As mentioned, even before the January 12 earthquake Haiti has suffered a history of poverty and illness and their need for aid will continue.
