As a nation that believes in freedom and democracy, it is frustrating to know that 1 out of 8 people in America lives under the poverty line. It is not just a lack of income. What if you don't have enough savings to cover your expenses,and suddenly you loose your job which is fairly a common occurrence these days, what will happen? Poverty is truly a horrible condition to be in.
3.5 million people including 1.3 million children experience homelessness each year. 1 Billion of the 2.2 children in the world live on poverty line. One person with a family of three must work for 59 hours a week on minimum wage in order to relieve their family from poverty. Now is that seem fair?
You can help. You, who are in the position to care for the sick, for the poor people that is constantly striving everyday to survive. You have a commitment to help those who are in need of it. Volunteer your time and skills to help causes that fight poverty. Become the change in the world.
You can also spread the news. Raise awareness about the rising poverty and inform your friends and family about the injustice. Even better, if you can write to your representatives in congress about it, then please do so. What it does is that it can generate a consciousness in them, that if a question is raised regarding the issue of poverty they can say that yes, one of his constituent wrote a letter about it. Maybe then, they can formulate and do some action about it.
What you can also do is to donate to one of many organizations that help to fight poverty. Just one simple act of goodness could mean a lot. It can save lives. It can create awareness that there is a need to fight off poverty. Donate food, clothing and old but still usable furnitures. You can also donate car, spare cars that you don't use anymore. All of these can help a lot.
John Donahue was once quoted saying that "failure to care for the poor is a failure to be faithful to God". I believe that to be true.So do your part and do it now. A goodness that you do will come back to you ten-fold.
