Charity is a humane gesture. It makes you sublime- a noble act when you are rinsed of the human vices of greed, selfishness, and material possession. A man feels poor not that he lacks the best car and the best costumes but because he is disabled from giving. Some societies give highest importance to this process of giving as it teaches community concern, creates harmony and most important of all lifts the mood of the person who gives. It is a march to the attainment of 'Nirvana' of oriental philosophy - search for the supreme Bliss.
Passion and involvement

Philanthropy enhances the common good of fellow human beings. It is sharing their suffering by contributing anything to that cause- money, goods, or personal involvement.
Before you donate, it is necessary that you have seriousness for the good cause you are passionate about. Learn as much as you can about that charity. It may not be so easy as the number of non-profits runs into thousands and you have to sieve out the one that meets your expectations.
Know your Charity.
Pay by check to the Charity and not to the mediators. You have a record for tax and you are secure. Cash payments are risky as these may be lost or stolen. Let the receipt that they issue for your payment bear an endorsement that it is tax deductible. They will also give you a tax exempt letter showing their status with the IRS. The IRS requires that your contribution of US$ 250 and above should be proved by a receipt from the charity - a canceled check is not enough- for all tax deductions. (This is not the same as Tax Exempted)
Request any of your family friends to review your decision of donation. You may involve your family members as they too will feel pleased in this act of giving.
If the Trustees claim that it is for the benefit of any local organization you may call them and verify the claim of solicitation. Ascertain the percentage of your donation that goes for administrative purposes and how much actually goes for the charity.
Know their mission statement, most recent audit papers, list of directors and written literature. Honest charities will encourage your interest.
Don't take decisions under pressure. Something may be wrong then. Take your own time and think before deciding.
Be Alert if the charity is offering you some gifts and ensure that the Charity is registered with the Federal State and /or local authorities.
