Did your mother ever tell you to eat everything on your dinner plate because there were starving children in Africa? We often tend to think of poor children living in remote areas of the world. However, poverty is not confined to one country or even one area of the world. There are children living in poverty in every nation and country in the world. Wait a minute, that means there are children here in America, the wealthiest nation in the world, who are living in the state of poverty. In fact, estimates from the National Center for Children in Poverty show that over 14 million children in America live a life of poverty. This means that they don't have enough to eat, they have poor, if any, healthcare, and their education is limited.
There are many reasons for poverty. With the current economic recession, it is easier to see first-hand how people are driven below the poverty line. If a factory goes belly-up and all the workers lose their jobs, only a percentage of those will find new work immediately, especially in a small town. If a family doesn't have any savings to get by on, then they can't even move to a larger city to find work. The cost of living continues to rise and the available cash dwindles. The children of these families suffer the most. They can do nothing about their situation and have a hard time fighting their way out of poverty.
Depending on where you live, you may be able to look around you and open your eyes to the poverty that still remains mostly hidden. Down a dirty side street, there may be a large cardboard box housing a small family. The sign on the local Salvation Army requests bread and milk every day. These and other signs can alert you to the state of poverty that so many children live in. Once you are aware of the problem, what can you do to help? There are many organizations which accept volunteers in programs that assist the poverty-stricken children of America. Other organizations work to gather donations which they use to feed, clothe, and educate children whose families cannot do it for them. If you cannot volunteer both time and money, you can at least volunteer one or the other. It is amazing how far even a small donation can go when overseen by a charity that truly cares about the nation's children more healthy and get the treatment they actually need.
