My daughter had signed an organ donor card, but my husband and I did not know it. We learned about our daughter's decision after she was severely injured in a car crash. Surgeons operated on her for 20 hours and could not save our daughter's life. Finally, the supervising surgeon told us our daughter was brain dead. Did we want to proceed with organ donation?
I was already in shock. The thought of donating my daughter's organs was another shock and I was worried sick about my 15-year-old twin grandchildren. They had just lost their mother -- their best friend and protector -- and we had lost our daughter. The surgeon described the organ harvesting procedure and, though I was an organ donor myself, I did not want to hear it.
Mayo Clinic discusses organ donation in a Web site article, "Organ donation: Don't Let Myths Stand in Your Way." One myth is that doctors won't work as hard to save the patient's life if the patient is an organ donor. This is not true, nor is the myth that the patient may still be alive when organs are harvested. "Even after death, every effort is made to ensure that your loved one's body is treated with the same degree of respect as is someone who is alive," the article notes.
We agreed to organ donation and signed the legal papers. The twins said their last goodbys to their mother and the images of their sorrow are clear in my mind. Two days later we received a call from the organ donor organization. Our daughter's organs had saved three lives and, thanks to her generosity, two strangers now see. When I heard this news I sobbed uncontrollably.
Weeks later we received a leather-bound certificate from the organ donor organization in recognition of our daughter. The twins received individual certificates and barely glanced at them. I understood their reaction. They did not want leather-bound certificates, they wanted their mother back and we wanted our daughter.
The grief associated with organ donation is an odd thing. First, it makes the finality of death all too clear. Though it is related to general grief, this kind of grief seems separate. The Grief Link Web site discusses organ donor grief in "Grief Reactions Associated With Organ Donation." According to the article organ donation may come as a shock to relatives. This was true for my husband and me.
Today, I find a measure of comfort in the fact that my daughter was an organ donor. As the Grief Link article says, "It as an opportunity for something positive to come out of tragedy." My daughter cared about others and this caring continues after her death.
Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas, discussed organ donation in a Web site article, "Donation -- The Gift of Life." The article says, "Giving the choice of organ donation to grieving families helps them regain a sense of control and begin the grieving process." Organ donation did not give me a sense of control, but it did give me a sense of giving. Nothing is more caring than signing an organ donor card.
We have received several letters from the organ donor organization. One was about grief and another was an invitation to a gathering of organ donor families, something we are not ready for yet. The hardest day will be my daughter's birthday, which is next week, and I know I will cry. I aso know I will find comfort in my daughter's generosity -- generosity beyond measure.
